Creating Holiday Traditions

Creating Holiday Traditions

Many families; biological, or created, form holiday traditions. I am lucky enough to live close to my sister and her family, 15 minuets away to be exact. Which makes this time of year a little less lonely and makes me a little less homesick. I am originally from Hawaii, both of my parents are from there and so are my grandparents. Everyone but "the kids", my brother, sister, and I still live scattered around Hawaii.

As many people could imagine, or are in fact away from family during the holiday season, it can be very lonely. Especially when you are new to an area. If your family has holiday traditions it can make your holiday's away even that much harder.

Which leads me to exploring the opportunity for creating new holiday traditions. Over the years you make friends that become your created family. And if you are lucky enough you will be able to create holiday traditions with them, like your real family! I do a little get together with friends, the activities always vary. One year we had a white elephant giving, the next we just did a game night. We are hoping to make this an annual thing for our group of friends.

Living in the great Pacific Northwest we have the great privilege to actually go to a Christmas Tree Farm. Ever since I moved up here in 2008 we have always gotten a Christmas Tree together, usually the weekend following Thanksgiving. As her family grew over the years we have kept this tradition between us alive, it's just a little more fun with little ones running around now. We end up making a whole day of it, filled with all the great spirit this time of year has to offer. We both get our trees, we go home turnt' up some Christmas music and decorate away.

It may not be the most glamorous, or exciting tradition but it is filled with joy, and memories to last a lifetime. I encourage you to find and make new holiday traditions with the people you love wherever you are!
