KK's Home Office: BEFORE

KK's Home Office: BEFORE

Happy Monday (and MLK day)! I have the day off today and yet, I am still think about work, specifically my office.

I ask that you please withhold any judgment when I say: I am normally pretty organized and stylish.

Yet, I have been avoiding our home office (or the Hoffice as we like to call it), working on my laptop in various corners of the house. It’s a storage room/catch all for things forgotten as you will see in the images below. I usually work in there but right now, it feels cluttered and un-inspired. Jared, my boyfriend, also works in there sometimes but he has also been avoiding the room for pretty much the same reason. In the next month or so, we are going to try and update the room in order to make it more it easier to concentrate. Without further ado here are the befores...

Upon entry, you walk in and there is just a jenga tower of junk. Not the kind of thing that inspires a WORKKPARTY-er.  I propose to get rid of the pile and repaint or restain the shelf in the foreground. The rug leaning on the wall will eventually be laid down. I also would like to paint the wall a different color. Right now the walls are beige and red. Not bad colors, just not what I am envisioning. Finally, I want to put up some rad artwork.

Directly to the left of the door is this mountain of stuff. The boxes on the bottom are brewing supplies that need to find another home elsewhere in the house. There is also a TV screen somewhere in there. In the back are our chaises. We need to get matching covers for them because they are berry and grey colored. Again not bad, just not the colors I want. Once this all gets cleared away, I want to repaint and make it a statement all. Right now, I am feeling a series of frames in an even grid, from floor to ceiling or across the wall. I will likely have the chaises along this wall as a sort of meeting spot and reading nook.

Then, there is Jared’s corner of the room. He usually uses this spot to write when I am not in there and chill out when I am. The chair will stay because it is probably one of the comfiest chairs we own. It’s also Jared’s version of a Blue’s Clues thinking chair for his writing. I tease but it’s totally cool that we can share this space to work.
That Independence Day poster is a holdover from his bachelorhood. IT’S GONNA GO. The Whiteboard is also part of his process and I really don’t mind it being there but it may need to come down in order for us to paint the room. I may add a side table, that is small enough for the space, to place his coffee or other writing supplies on.

Now for my workspace. Ugh is all I can say. I like the size and color of my desks but they don’t quite fit the humongous screen that I have for work. It’s also not super ergonomic, which is another reason that I haven’t been working in here. My neck and shoulders have been killing me. This may have something to do with my chair, which is just an armchair. Some solutions for this space are: get a new chair, get a new desk or rearrange it, Marie Kondo the shit out of the papers and office supplies in here, and possibly find a new way to use the bar cart.

he area right next to my desk is a closet. It’s filled with a lot of items and is definitely not being used to its best potential. After re-evaluating what’s in there, I will likely add a curtain or covering of some sort to hide the clutter. I also want to add in the space above the closet, I want to add a backdrop holder to drop down for taking photos. The window there is pretty perfect as natural lighting. Speaking of the window, I will paint the trims white and add in blinds for privacy.

I think you see that I have my work cut out for me. Right now I am in a list making and researching phase. I won’t be able to make real changes until next month when some of this stuff is moved out. This will be bittersweet considering that the stuff that is in there is my future sister-in-law’s things. She will be moving out of the state and taking it with her and her boyfriend. And I will move in like a stylish vulture to make the room a little more habitable. As far as inspiration, I am liking lots of neutral colors: Gray, golds, cream.

With any luck, I will be coming back to you in a few Mondays with a complete before and after. Please let me know if you have any suggestions and insights in the comments below!

Love,
KK
